On April 17 2026, an information session on the topic “Rules of Ethical Conduct for Judges and Lawyers” was jointly organized by the Judicial-Legal Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Bar Association of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Institute for Law and Human Rights, a public legal entity. The session brought together judicial candidates, candidates for admission to the Bar, legal professionals, lawyers, as well as legal experts working in the courts and other public institutions.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Mahammad Guluzade, Chairman of the Management Board of the Institute, emphasized the fundamental importance of ethical principles within the justice system. He noted that strict adherence to high ethical standards by judges and lawyers in the exercise of their professional duties has a direct impact on the quality of the administration of justice. In this regard, he stressed that awareness-raising events of this nature make a significant contribution to enhancing the professional knowledge and skills of legal practitioners and to fostering a strong legal culture.

During the session, Mr. Rashad Hasanli, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Judicial-Legal Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan, delivered a presentation on the Rules of Ethical Conduct for Judges, outlining the fundamental principles governing judicial conduct and the relevant international standards applicable in this field. Subsequently, Mr. Javid Aliyev, Chair of the Disciplinary Commission of the Bar Association of the Republic of Azerbaijan, delivered a presentation on the ethical rules governing the legal profession. He addressed the lawyer’s relationship with clients, interactions with courts and other public authorities, and the importance of establishing and maintaining professional standards and ensuring continuous professional development.

The session continued with a question-and-answer discussion led by Mr. Vali Abdullayev, President of the Shirvan Court of Appeal, and Ms. Saadat Baktashi, former judge and member of the Institute’s Expert Council. They responded to participants’ questions concerning ethical issues and common ethical violations encountered in the professional activities of judges and lawyers.

As part of the session, participants exchanged views on practical case studies and discussed effective approaches to ensuring compliance with ethical standards in judicial and legal practice.
